Ash was trying to make sense of the situation on Capuron.

It wasn’t the Library’s fault that family messages about the Guardian had changed over hundreds of years. But she wondered if Ruffako was ready for the information he was about to receive. He’d practically puffed up when he’d mentioned his ancestors. How would he feel when he found out his ancestry was entirely different to what he imagined?

This was the problem sometimes – the Library looked at planets and populations, not individuals. And individuals had diverse thinking, all over the universe. Ash felt certain there would be some bird people who’d welcome the discovery and some who would hate it. But the tiny feathers round her neck prickled. What if Ruffako was one of the ones who hated it?

They took off into the sky. Ezra flew alongside Ruffako and she could see him making an attempt at conversation. It was clear Ruffako wasn’t happy though. Ash wanted to get a better look at the site, then return to the clouds to make plans to transport the body and equipment. First she needed to make sure the gadgets the Library had given her would work. She’d hate to get all the artefacts down there only to be met with a rock face that wouldn’t move.

Ezra turned his head back towards Ash and Trik, then dropped back. “The journey might be a bit longer than we expected.”

Ash nodded. She knew the Library would have landed them as near to the cave as possible, but her wings were aching already from the unfamiliar movements.

Their journey was mainly in a downwards direction, but it seemed that Ruffako might be taking them on a scenic route. He gestured with his head to one point. “We can’t fly too close to the ground here. Toxic gases.”

Ash’s automatic reaction was to try and hold her breath, but that was hardly going to work. The group moved slightly higher into the atmosphere again while the smooth ground beneath them slipped past, unchanging.

Eventually Ruffako swooped low at some grey cliffs. The cliff face was rugged, and there was a large collection of rocks strewn across the floor of the valley below.

Ruffako circled for a moment and then gestured for them to alight on the rocks. The surrounding land was odd. Dry, brown and arid looking in parts, without even a patch of moss or any signs of vegetation, and gloopy and swampy in others. There were even a few bubbles breaking on the surface of the dark sludge.

He tucked his wings behind him. “These are the dead lands. Try and walk on that surface and that’s exactly how you’ll end up – dead. Nothing survives in among the quicksand and marshes. Even these rocks will eventually disintegrate.”

Trik gave a cough. There was a noxious smell in the air around them. Ash nodded solemnly and looked up at the cliff face. The entrance had to be somewhere up there. It took a moment to extract one of the scanners from the sling across her body.
